How It Works

There are three main ways a DAWN user connects and contributes:
1. Using an Existing Internet Provider
At the beginning, most users will still connect their Black Box to a standard Internet provider. The device uses the existing connection but manages it more efficiently.
It can automatically share any unused bandwidth with others in the DAWN network and record these exchanges transparently on-chain. Users earn rewards for the bandwidth they share, and others gain access to stable, low-cost connectivity.
2. Building a Local Mesh
As more people in a community install their Black Boxes, they start linking directly with one another. Each device becomes part of a peer-to-peer mesh network, routing data through nearby nodes instead of relying entirely on an ISP. This setup creates local resilience and allows neighborhoods, campuses, or rural areas to stay connected even if a traditional Internet provider goes offline.
3. Connecting Through Rooftop Antennas
In later stages, users can install rooftop antennas that broadcast and receive wireless signals over longer distances. These antennas allow groups of homes or buildings to form fully decentralized networks that no longer depend on conventional infrastructure. The antennas extend coverage, connect separate clusters of DAWN nodes, and make it possible for people to access the Internet entirely through community-owned infrastructure.
