The funds, reportedly lost due to a “broken process” during the Biden administration, have now been redirected for use by the Treasury.

The effort to reclaim the funds was spearheaded by a newly established DOGE task force within HUD, created by HUD Secretary Scott Turner. This task force was tasked with scrutinizing HUD’s financial processes to ensure taxpayer money is allocated effectively.

To rectify the situation, DOGE collaborated with HUD to “de-obligate” the funds, making them available for other governmental uses. Significant Staffing Cuts on the Horizon

The push for efficiency has also put some HUD programs in jeopardy. The Green and Resilient Retrofit Program, which provides support to affordable housing developers, is among those that could be canceled as part of budgetary restructuring.
